Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria at its creation in 1962 inherited the Faculty of Engineering along with it, the Department of Electrical Engineering from the Nigeria college of Arts, Science, and Technology, Zaria Branch. But in 1962 it was transferred to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and re-organized to award degrees in Electrical Engineering. Prior to the take-over, the Faculty had produced over 70 Engineers who gained degrees of the University of London under a scheme of special relationship in the period 1962-1965 The foundation of the Electrical Engineering Department was therefore, on very solid grounds. Post-graduate studies in the Department of Electrical Engineering started in the late 1960s, with the first set graduating in 1968.

Since then, the programme has regularly been reviewed and restructured to meet the needs of the nation and at the same time to conform with change in the Electrical Engineering profession. At present, the department offers post-graduate programme leading to the award of an M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering.
Out of a desire to properly position the Department of Electrical Engineering, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, the Department signed an MOU with Etisalat, Nigeria in 2013 to commence the Etisalat Telecommunications Engineering Programme (ETEP). The Department of Electrical Engineering undertook a comprehensive review of its postgraduate programs (M.Sc and Ph.D) and with effect from the 2012/13 session and commence a graduate studies in Electric Power Systems Engineering, Machines and Industrial Drives, Computer and Control Engineering, and Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering.
During the 2011/2012 session, the National Universities Commission, after a resource assessment exercise approved the change of the name of the Department from Electrical Engineering to Electrical and Computer: Engineering. They subsequently in the year 2017 approved the splitting of the Department into the Department of:
