Duration

  • The duration of the full-time "PGD. Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering" programme shall be a minimum of four (4) semesters of 15 weeks each.

It is intended that the programme will develop a critical mass of professionals in Electronics and Communications Engineering for the public and private sectors etc. It is also expected that it will provide the theoretical and practical skills needed for further graduate study and research work in the various fields of Electronics and Communications Engineering.

The overall aim of the programme is to expand the knowledge and skills of scientists, engineers and technologists in such a way that they are able to manage, more effectively, the use of modern ICT systems for their purposes. Students will gain knowledge, attitudes and experiences that are necessary to appreciate the philosophy and design of electrical/electronic systems. The objectives of the Post-Graduate Diploma programme are:

  • To provide an avenue for continuous professional development.
  • To impart new techniques in Electronics and Communications technology.
  • To enhance manpower development.
  • To provide formal training in electrical technology for those with science background who need it.
  • To serve as a bridge into higher degree programmes in Electronics and Communications Engineering for those who need it.
  • To impart competencies required to take the Nigerian Society of Engineers' graduateship examination.

To be eligible for admission into the PGD programme a candidate must possess:

  1. A first degree in Computer/Communications/Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Physics not lower than a Third Class from a recognized University or equivalent Institution.
  2. A Higher National Diploma in Computer / Communications / Electrical / Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Physics at Upper Credit Level from a recognized Polytechnic or equivalent Institution.
  3. Any other qualification, which together with relevant experience is deemed to be equivalent to (a) or (b) above by the Department and approved by the Faculty Board and the Senate.
  4. In addition to (a) and (c), a candidate must score at least 50% in the entrance examination to be considered for admission.


Where necessary candidates may be required to clear or make up for deficiency in previous training. Each case will be considered individually by the Departmental PG Committee, which will recommend the undergraduate Computer Engineering s that must be taken by the candidate to clear the deficiencies.

Who can apply?

The Postgraduate Diploma programmes are aimed at various categories of students. The first categories of students are graduates of Electronics and Communications Engineering who are desirable of pursuing graduate study and research but graduated with Third Class degrees or graduates of other Engineering fields, also desirable of graduate studies in Electronics and Communications Engineering.

The next category includes graduates of such fields as Physics, Computer Science, etc, who desire to pursue graduate studies in Electronics and Communications Engineering. In addition, the Postgraduate Diploma programmes also provide some of them with a path to pursue registration with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) as Engineers. The final category includes graduates of Polytechnics with the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Computer / Communications / Electrical / Electronics Engineering or Computer Science.

To obtain the Postgraduate Diploma, a candidate must;

a). Obtain a minimum of 61 credit units at the 700-level made up as follows:

i. 39 credit units of core courses
ii. 6 credit units of elective courses
iii. 6 credit units of laboratory practicals
iv. 10 credit units of project/seminar

b). Satisfy all other requirements as stipulated in the School of Postgraduate Studies.

A candidate who obtains a CGPA of not less than 3.00 on a 4-point or 4.00 on a 5-point grade scale MAY be considered for admission into the Electrical/Communication/Computer Engineering Master's Degree programmes of Ahmadu Bello University.

Students of the Master degree in "Telecommunications Engineering" are provided with in-depth knowlege and training in design, analysis and management skills relevant to theory and practice in the telecommunications industry.

PhD. Electronics Engineering

Students of the PhD degree in "Electronics Engineering" shall be imparted the knowlege and capability which they require for careers as electronics engineers, enabling them to contribute towards developments in their various field.
