It is a two-year course. Intending candidates must have a minimum degree of 2-2 in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from recognized and accredited University. Graduates of other engineering discipline also with a minimum degree of 2-2 can be considered for admission with willingness to undertake undergraduate core courses in metallurgical and Materials Engineering. The core courses include: Corrosion, Steelmaking, Physical Metallurgy (Ferrous), Phase Transformation, Mechanical Working of Metals and Mechanical Metallurgy II. While a third class degree of Ahmadu Bello University is equally eligible to apply after five years of graduation such a candidate must have worked within the engineering field to up date himself or herself. Courses offered cover three areas of specialization: Process, Physical and Mechanical Metallurgy.
The minimum entry requirement for admission into the programme is at least a Second Class (Honours) Degree in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering or any related degree of Ahmadu Bello University, or of any other recognised University.
M.Sc. courses are Full-Time study programmes lasting a minimum of three semesters and a maximum of six semesters. The first two semesters consist of formal lectures supported by laboratory work, drawing office practices, seminars and case studies in appropriate for each subject. Students will be examined by written examinations in each of the courses of their respective programmes at the end of the first and second semesters. On successful completion of the course work, students will be assigned individual research projects under the guidance of a supervisor or supervisors. At the end of the programme, they will be required to submit a satisfactory thesis on the assigned project.
A candidate must achieve, in the written (or continuously assessed) examinations, at least 50% in each of the subjects. In addition, a student must pass an oral examination of the thesis conducted by a panel of both internal and external examiners.
